Abimael Acosta Portalatín (born April 3, 1965) is a Puerto Rican actor, writer, director and producer.

EARLY YEARS

Abimael Acosta was born in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico, in 1965. Abimael is the eldest of three siblings, and from a young age, he was drawn to the arts, with drawing being the first skill he exhibited. As a child, he began to showcase his artistic abilities by writing, directing, and acting in the plays he staged with his neighbors in the neighborhood where he lived.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

At the age of 18, he moved to San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico, to study communications and theater. While attending the university, he took part in various student productions within the Drama Department and also participated in plays at the University Theater, gaining valuable experience and building connections with many individuals who would later assist him in advancing his career as an actor and subsequently as a writer.

ACTING CAREER

Abimael began his acting career simultaneously in film, theater, and television but later shifted his interests towards dramatic writing. In the theater, he participated in productions such as "El Jorobado de Notre Dame," "Pepita Jiménez," "El Dragón," "La Tras Escena," "La Jaula," "Prisma Social," among others. On television and in cinema, he stood out as an actor in works like "Flores de la Noche," "La Charca," "Cuando Despierta el Amor," "Amores como todos los demás," "¿Será acaso este su caso?" and "Doña Ana."

DIRECTING AND WRITING CAREER

During his acting career, Abimael discovered a passion for writing and directing, prompting him to venture into television writing. His first opportunity in this field came with the sitcom "Solteros Siempre" on WAPA TV. This was followed by a series of projects, including "Flores de la Noche," "Amores como todos los demás," "Un Ángel de Hojalata," "Que candela de pueblito," "El Regalo," "Los Vecinos," "la Vida es un Carnaval" among others. Abimael also wrote radio dramas for WIPR radio. Abimael also wrote two volumes of his fantasy serie books: Wizards and The Chalice of Blood.

PRODUCING CAREER

By 1999, Abimael ventured into theater production and direction, bringing to life theatrical works such as "Los Invisibles," "Mamá apaga la plancha," and "¿Quién puede más?" Subsequently, he decided to explore production and direction in the realms of film and television. In this capacity, he produced the interview program "Primera Llamada," created the documentary "Eso no viene más," and directed and produced the film "Muerte en el Paraíso." He also co-directed the film "Doña Ana." His expansion into production and direction across various media platforms showcased his versatility and commitment to the arts.

LOS ANGELES CAREER

In 2011, Abimael Acosta relocated to Los Angeles, California, in search of new opportunities. There, he has worked as an actor, writer, producer, and director on projects such as "Indie Scene," "Jorge y Abimael conversan hoy," "Chicos de Alquiler," "LatinX," and "Desde el Arte." In Los Angeles, Abimael has collaborated with renowned directors like Sam Raimi, Warren Beatty, Christopher Nolan, among others. In 2022, Abimael ventured into musical theater, presenting his musical "I am Sylvia" in New York City.
