Abhisar Sharma
Abhisar Sharma is an Indian journalist, television news anchor, bestselling author, and digital media commentator, recognized for his incisive political analysis and independent reporting across major news outlets and his own YouTube platform.[1][2][3]
Early Life and Education
Born on 13 August 1972 in New Delhi, Sharma completed his schooling at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Tagore Garden, followed by a diploma in Journalism from Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan, New Delhi. He also completed a BBC course on Chemical and Biological Radiation at Punjab University, Chandigarh.
Journalism Career
Sharma began his career freelancing at outlets such as All India Radio, The Observer, and Hindustan Times, before joining Newstrack as a trainee reporter in 1995. He subsequently worked as an assistant producer at B.A.G. Films (1996), then as a reporter and prime-time news anchor at Zee News, covering topics from wildlife to politics and Parliament.[4]
In 1999, he moved to the BBC (Bush House, London) before transitioning to the BBC Delhi Bureau in 2001, producing news packages and special programs. He then joined NDTV in 2003 and conceptualized India’s first half-hour satire, Gustakhi Maaf, while covering international affairs including visits by Prime Minister Vajpayee and the U.S. presidential elections.[5]
Sharma went on to serve as Deputy Editor at the TV Today Network (2007–2012), had a brief stint at Zee Network in 2013, and then became an anchor on ABP News from 2013. In 2018, he opted for independent journalism, primarily focusing on digital platforms.[6]
Digital Media and Independent Commentary
As of late 2023, Sharma has garnered a substantial following on YouTube, with approximately 2.9 million subscribers and over 1,300 videos, positioning him as one of India’s most followed independent news commentators. In 2024, he maintained his status as the top individual journalist on YouTube for eight consecutive months, according to his social media update.[7]
In 2023, his residence was raided by Delhi Police amid a broader investigation into NewsClick, though he refuted any wrongdoing.[8][9]
Authorship
Sharma is also an accomplished novelist, having published titles such as The Eye of the Predator, The Edge of the Machete, and A Hundred Lives for You. His media experience significantly informs his storytelling.[10]
Awards and Recognition
He won the Ramnath Goenka Journalism Award in 2008 and the Red Ink Award in 2016 (or 2017 according to some sources) for excellence in reporting, particularly for his human rights coverage like Operation Laal Jungle.
