Abeles & Heymann is an American kosher food brand specializing in kosher hot dogs and deli meats. The company was popularized out of The Bronx, New York. The company's headquarters are in Hillside, NJ.[1]

History

Abeles and Heymann was founded in 1954 by Oscar Abeles and Leopold Heymann[2] as a butcher store in Washington Heights, NY. Later, the company relocated to a 2,500 square foot manufacturing facility in the Bronx, NY. [3]

Seth Leavitt and his attorney cousin David Flamholz purchased Abeles and Heymann in 1997.[4] At the time of purchase, Leavitt was 24 years old, and had worked in the meat industry and food sales alongside his father. [5]

In 2006, Abeles and Hermann launched A&H for ABCs, a charity initiative in which a percentage of Long Island sales will be donated to youth Hebrew schools. [6]

In 2007, Leavitt moved the company to Hillside, NJ into a new and modernized facility [7]. The company experienced a ten-fold increase in sales upon moving to the newer 18,000 square foot facility. [3]

By 2010, Abeles & Heymann hot dogs were available at Costco Wholesale Stores.[8]

In 2012, Abeles & Heymann partnered with Maadany Yehiam, the manufacturing arm of an Israeli Kibbutz [9]. The partnership resulted in a 50% growth in sales. [3]

By 2013, Abeles and Heymann hot dogs were available at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.[10]

As of 2016, Abeles & Heymann expanded its kosher hot dog production to include gluten-free and sodium-free alternatives. [11] Later that year, Abeles & Heymann became the first kosher foods company to incorporate modified atmosphere packaging technology into its production line. This process increases the product's shelf life. [12] By late that year, Abeles & Heymann hot dogs were available through national chain supermarkets and independent kosher stores across the United States. [13]

As of 2017, Abeles and Heymann kosher hot dogs were available in reduced fat and no-nitrate varieties.[14] After the devastation of Hurricane Harvey in Houston, Abeles and Heymann organized a fundraiser, alongside the Houston Federation and Chabad of Houston, to raise money and send kosher food to affected people. [15]

In 2018, Abeles and Heymann was an official sponsor for the US Embassy in Israel's Independence Day Celebration.[16] That same year, Abeles and Heymann was producing an average of 30,000 pounds of kosher hot dogs and deli meat per week. [3] Midway through the year, Abeles & Heymann expanded its product line to include glatt kosher turkey breast. [17] By early 2018, Abeles and Heymann was producing a kosher for Passover hot dog, selling over 4 million per year.[18] By 2018, Abeles & Heymann products were available at additional American sports arenas including Legends Lounge in Yankee Stadium, MetLife Stadium, and the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. [2]

By 2021, Abeles and Heymann's production facility had expanded to 25,000 square feet and was producing 12,000 pounds of hot dogs per day. [5] That year, Abeles & Heymann hot dogs were available in all United States Trader Joe's locations.[19]

Sales

As of 2018, Leavitt claimed to have grown the company to $7-10mm per year in sales. [2]

According to Leavitt, Passover is one of the biggest sales seasons of the year.[20]

Kosher Supervision

Abeles and Heymann products are certified glatt kosher by the Orthodox Union[7], under Rabbi Yechiel Babad and Kehila Kashrus. [21] Only Abeles & Heymann hot dogs are considered kosher by most Orthodox Jews. [22]

While most meats are kosher for Passover, Abeles & Heymann does special kosher-for-Passover production runs on equipment that has been cleaned and made Kosher under rabbinical supervision. [20]

Reception

In July 2004, Forward named A&H beef frankfurters as the top pick in a taster’s survey of kosher hot dogs.[6]

In 2005, Abeles and Heymann was named best hot dog by the St Louis Post Dispatch and New York Daily News.[23]

In 2013, Forward Magazine named Abeles and Heymann’s beef frank the top dog in America.[24]

In 2021, Abeles and Heymann beef hot dogs were chosen as a top-tier grocery store hot dog by Uproxx.[25]
