Abedan "Abbi" Kanthasamy is a Malaysia-based inventor, serial entrepreneur, investor and photographer. He is mostly known for his inventions[1][2] as well as founding and running a number of manufacturer and restaurant companies across several countries.

Background

Abedan Kanthasamy (also known as Abbi Kanthasamy) was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka and raised in Jaffna, Sri Lanka.[3][4] His mother Dr. Parvathy Kanthasamy, a linguistics specialist, is originally from Sri Lanka's northern Jaffna Peninsula.[5][6] Kanthasamy attended Gunn High School in Palo Alto, California, and then graduated from McGill University in Quebec, Canada with a degree in Engineering (BEng) with the main focus being on biosystems.[4] Kanthasamy is also a professional landscape and architecture photographer[4] being presented at various exhibitions and galleries.[7][8][9] In 2017, Abedan Kanthasamy and Shahriar Khan co-authored a book "No boundaries: beyond race, religion and colour about cricket sports culture in Sri Lanka.[10][4] He currently lives with his family in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.[4][11][12]

Entrepreneurial activity

Kanthasamy began his career in 1998 at Lifestyle Solutions Inc., a furniture manufacturer company based in San Jose, California, where he served as senior vice-president until 2014, being responsible for manufacturing processes and product design.[12] Since then, Kanthasamy founded or run as a CEO a number of companies including Cinnamon Group, where he is also a Board Member,[13][14] Petra Group,[15][16] where Kanthasamy holds positions of Chief Innovation Officer and Chief Executive of PETRA Mobilia,[17] the furniture division of the company,[3][18] and Domus Vita Design, an international furniture design and manufacturer company. Kanthasamy is also an owner of several restaurants in Malaysia.[19][20][6]

As an inventor, Kanthasamy has been instrumental in developing new furniture designs while using furniture manufacturer Tempur-Pedic's materials. The coordinated project led to establishing another company, which distributes products across 21 countries.[12]

Domus Vita Design

In 2014, Kanthasamy founded Domus Vita Inc. traded as Domus Vita Design,[21] a furniture design and manufacturer company, specializing in sofa beds, recliners and lift chairs with headquarters in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The company received a manufacturer license under the US Sealy Corporation brand and established a separate company named Sealy Sofa Convertibles.[11][22][23][12] The company's products have been mainly distributed through the renown brands in North America, including Costco, Sam’s Club, and Slumberland Furniture, among others.[12]

Inventions and patent infringement

Kanthasamy holds 42 granted and 12 still pending approval U.S. patents mostly related to his inventions for Life Style Solutions Inc., and other manufacturers.[1][2] The company was a plaintiff in the legal case Lifestyle Solutions, Inc., Plaintiff, v. Abbyson Living LLC and Abbyson Living Corp., Defendants, suing the defendant over U.S. Design Patent D610,366 infringement, titled "Sofa Bed With Multiple Positions."[24]
