Abdullah Ibhais is a former media manager for Qatar's Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, in charge of organising the 2022 FIFA World Cup who has been the target of a controversial imprisonment.[1]

In November 2019, he was fired from his position and put under investigations of mismanagement of funds by Qatar authorities after having spoken out in favour of a strike by migrant workers.[2][3]

Human Rights Watch stated that it seemed as if he was "in jail because of suspicion and paranoia, not any evidence of wrongdoing" and that "the prosecution presented no credible supporting evidence that he committed any crime."[4][5] Amnesty International called the trial "unfair" and stated that "allegations that he has been threatened and coerced into making incriminating confessions must be independently and effectively investigated."[6]

In November 2021, FIFA stated that it would not intervene in the case.[7] Later that month, two Norwegian journalists, Halvor Ekeland and Lokman Ghorbani, both with NRK, were arrested by Qatar authorities several hours ahead of a planned interview with Ibhais.[8][9]

In December 2021, the guilty verdict was upheld and he was sentenced to three years in prison.[10] Earlier that month, he had launched a hunger strike to protest his imprisonment.[11]

In January 2022, it was announced that he could face further charges of defaulting on a loan. He was unable to repay the loan after the World Cup organising committee refused to pay him severance pay after firing him.[12]
