Abdul Rashid Dar was a politician and a lawyer from the Anantnag district|Anantanag district of Kashmir region in the state of Jammu and Kashmir (state)|Jammu and Kashmir who served as an Member of the Legislative Assembly (India)|MLA from Shangus and Chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council, the upper house of the bicameral legislature of Jammu and Kashmir, he served two consecutive terms as the chairman.

Political career

In the 1987 J&K state Legislative Assembly Elections, he contested from the Shangus constituency of Anantnag district|Anantanag and won the seat as a member of the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference|JKNC he served in the state assembly till it was dissolved by the then governor of J&K Jagmohan.[1] In 1996 Dar went on to become a Member of the Jammu and Kashmir (state)|Jammu and Kashmir Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council|Legislative Council , he was elected as the deputy chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council|J&K Legislative Council in the year 1998 and served as the deputy chairman till 2001 and then Dar was elected as the chairman for two consecutive terms till 2008. While serving as the chairman, he ceased to be a member of the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference|JKNC in 2004 and remained independent while continuing to be the chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council|J&K Legislative Council . In the same year a Motion of no confidence|No confidence motion was moved against Abdul Rashid Dar by the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference|Jammu and Kashmir National conference the motion was introduced to the house but the motion failed to muster the required number of votes and hence was rejected and Dar won the confidence of the house and continued as the chairman of the house. He was also a member and vice president (JK CPA Branch) of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association from 2001 to 2008. He visited different countries in official tours such as United States|USA, China, Canada, Japan, South Africa etc.[2]

Early life and education

Abdul Rashid Dar was born on 13 April 1949 in Anantnag|Anantanag, Jammu and Kashmir (union territory)|Jammu and Kashmir. He went to the local school for primary and higher secondary education and after completing school he went on to pursue B.A and L.L.B from the University of Kashmir , after completing his education he practiced as a Lawyer and later on joined the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference|Jammu and Kashmir Nation Conference and moved to politics, Dar passed away on 28 February 2020.[3]
