Aaron "White Owl" Collins is an American musician best known for his work with White Trash, Murphy's Law, Butterbrain, Skarhead and Hash.[1] He has collaborated with musicians such as Angelo Moore, James Drescher, Danny Diablo and Benjamin Clapp. He was also the founder of Gotham Gold Music Productions[2], a production company based in Queens, New York.
Career
Collins was trained at an early age as a classical pianist, switched to the bass guitar at the age of 10 by his older brother Ethan[3]. In his late teens, Collins and his brother joined with neighbors Dave Alvin and Mike "Ssslestak" Caldarella to form White Trash[4], which was signed to Elektra Records in 1989,[5] and had a Billboard Hot 100 hit with "Apple Pie" in the summer of 1991, fueled by a video that was featured in heavy rotation on MTV[6]
After White Trash, Collins played in several bands spanning genres from punk to hip-hop before being recruited to play bass for the hardcore band Murphy's Law in 1998.[7] Collins later rejoined White Trash for two albums,[8] 2009's 3-D Monkeys In Space, which was released on Collins' production company Gotham Gold Records[9] and 2015's Suburban Purgatory.[10][11]
In the mid-2010's, Collins formed Butterbrain, featuring a number of musicians who Collins had met in his high school band class, as well as current and former members of White Trash, Hash and Inspecter 7. After an EP and the full length album Sapiosexual[12] they connected with Angelo Moore of Fishbone[13] and are at present preparing to release their third studio album, produced by and featuring Moore, and including a cover of "I Against I" by Bad Brains. The band has played shows primarily in the New York City tri-state area[14] and in Florida, often sharing a bill with the Florida-based ska band ¡Fuákata![15][16] as well as the Queens-based band Giftshop,[17] The band is also a fixture at The Bowery Electric, on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.[18] In late 2024 and early 2025, two songs written by Collins for Butterbrain, "Armageddon Party" and "Hold Tight", were featured on the website PunkNews.org.[19][20], and in March the single "Halfway To Jupiter" was released[21] with the video premiering on BlankTV. A promotional tour of New York City and Florida was embarked upon to support the new album.[22]
Personal
Collins was born in Queens to musician parents[23] and attended Francis Lewis High School and Queens College, He currently resides in Rockaway Beach, Queens. In addition to his music, he is an avid surfer.
