AIAM5 is the global alliance to promote fruit and vegetable consumption “5 a day". An international network with the goal of preventing Non-communicable Diseases (NCDs) and micronutrient deficiencies.[1][2]. The movement takes its name from the minimum number of portions of fruits and vegetables recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), for the maintenance of a complete, balanced and healthy diet[3]. "5 a day" arose in The United States in 1989[4][5][6], and today is implemented in more than 40 countries around the world[1]

The AIAM5 Global Alliance is a non-profit with non-legal status and its own Forum of International Collaboration, connecting freely associated entities representing nationwide the promotion of fruit and vegetables consumption, whether named or "5 a day" or not. It aims to set up collaborations with other international associations, governmental departments, nongovernmental associations and/or international private companies which include among their objectives the promotion of fruit and vegetable consumption, within the framework of healthy eating habits and active lifestyles.[1]

Main Values

The main message of the AIAM5 Global Alliance is:

  • That the motto "Fruits and Vegetables, the best choice for your health".[7], be considered a priority in policies of health promotion and policies for the prevention and control of obesity, NCDs and other diseases related to the eating habits, taking part and supporting the United Nations in improving food and nutritional world security[8].

It supports national initiatives, promotes efficiencies and facilitates collaboration on shared aims and provides global leadership in[1]:

  • Creating and sustaining programs such as "5 a day"[9];
  • Increasing the consumption of fruit and vegetables in the world's populations within the framework of a healthy diet according to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) recommendation[10];
  • Bringing together national entities promoting fruits and vegetables consumption as an important element of a good diet strategy[3];
  • Promoting and valuing biodiversity and sustainable systems that are environmentally friendly for production and distribution - the main goal, for example, of the common agricultural policy of EU countries or the Sustainable Development Goals of OECD and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of the United Nations[11][12].

General Objectives

The main goals of AIAM5 Global Alliance arise from the need to support and develop fruit and vegetable dietary initiatives, to promote healthy eating habits, provide access to evidence-based nutritional education, to facilitate access to healthy foods, and build a long-term strategy to support public health good nutritional practice. These goals are thoroughly justified by the existing epidemiological data and available scientific evidence on public health[13][14][15]. General objectives include:

  • To gather together programs such as "5 a day", by means of free and well informed cooperation, supporting national policies;
  • To seek the support of international entities and programs; Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), World Health Organization (WHO), Pan American Health Organization (OPS) among others, whose fundamental aim is to promote the development of high impact strategies for the wellbeing of people;
  • To motivate governments to create and support programs such as "5 a day" for the promotion of the consumption of fruit and vegetables;
  • To consolidate at global level strategies for the promotion of the consumption of fruit and vegetables to reach the public health aim of “600 grams per person per day” or “at least 5 portions daily of fruit and vegetables”;
  • To inform the public of the benefits of fruit and vegetables in the framework of healthy eating habits to contribute to the ability of the population to manage its own health;
  • To educate and inform the world's population about the formation of healthy habits, stressing the consumption of fruit and vegetables by children and youngsters through mandated nutritional education in schools;
  • To support mechanisms leading to the accessibility and affordability of fruit and vegetables for all sectors of society;
  • To promote national policies to protect family agriculture (small and medium) including incentives for fruit and vegetable agriculture, the creation of transport and commercial mechanisms benefitting both producers and consumers and by promoting schemes to increase the consumption of fruit and vegetables in schools, making fruit and vegetable consumption part of the school curriculum;
  • To protect or recover, depending on the case, gastronomical, culinary and folk traditions using plant-based produce, mainly fruit and vegetables;
  • To promote and protect systems for sustainable production and distribution, through the strengthening of the primary sector;
  • To strengthen national organizational capacity, both public and private, to organize activities for the research, production, distribution and/or commercialization of fruit and vegetables - as structures of each National Association.
