A. F. M. Shahen Shah (born 2 October 1987) is a Bangladesh-born Turkish scientist and academic.[1] He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at Yildiz Technical University (YTU),[2] where he also serves as the Director of the AI and Next-Generation Wireless Communication Laboratory (ANWCL).[3] His research focuses on wireless communication, artificial intelligence, UAV networks, Internet of Things (IoT) and 6G technologies.[4][5] He is a senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a life member of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB).[6][7][8][9]

Early life and education

A. F. M. Shahen Shah was born in Lakshmipur, Bangladesh. He received the B.Sc. degree in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering from Daffodil International University, Bangladesh, in 2009, followed by an M.Sc. degree in Information Technology from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 2011.[10][11] He completed his Ph.D. in Electronics and Communication Engineering at Yildiz Technical University, Türkiye, in 2020.[12] In recognition of the contributions from his doctoral research, he was awarded the Gold Medal at the 32nd International Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition (ITEX 2021).[13][14]

Career

In 2021, Shahen joined the Yildiz Technical University as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering.[2][15] He was promoted to the position of Associate Professor in 2023. Prior to this, he served as a faculty member at Istanbul Gelisim University in Istanbul, Turkey, from 2020 to 2021.[16]

Research Work

A. F. M. Shahen Shah is best known for developing the architecture of emergency communication systems in disasters through UAVs.[8][9][17] Communication networks are often severely disrupted during natural disasters like earthquakes and floods. In response to this urgent need, a pioneering drone-based emergency communication system has been developed to maintain vital connectivity during natural disasters. The system, invented by him is designed to operate as a substitute for damaged base stations during emergencies. Shah also made important contributions to the communication protocol for autonomous vehicles.[7][18]

Moreover, he has been developing artificial intelligence-based 6G-related technology. He is managing a few important projects of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) and the Scientific Research Projects Coordination of Yildiz Technical University.[19]

Awards and recognition

  • He has appeared on the Stanford University and Elsevier list of the world’s top 2% scientists since 2023[20][21][22] and ranked among the top 1% researchers in Networking & Telecommunications in 2025.[23][24][25]
  • For his Ph.D. research, he received the Gold Medal at the 32nd International Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition (ITEX 2021).[13]

Fellowship and membership

He is a Senior Member of the IEEE and a life member of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB).[6]
