Žiko Milanović (born March 17, 1994 in Prijepolje) is a Serbian chemist specializing in theoretical and computational chemistry. His work centers on molecular modeling and quantum chemical analysis of antioxidant mechanisms in natural and synthetic polyphenolic compounds.
As of 2025, he has authored over 70 peer-reviewed articles indexed in the Science Citation Index (SCI), cited more than 630 times. He holds a PhD in chemical sciences from the University of Kragujevac, where he is currently affiliated with the Institute for Information Technologies. He is a member of the Serbian Chemical Society, and won the Best Student Paper Award at the 21st IEEE BIBE in 2021.
Early life and education
Milanović completed primary education at Vladimir Perić Valter Primary School in Prijepolje.[1] He graduated from Prijepoljska gimnazija high school in the same town.[2]
He earned a BSc in chemistry in 2017 from the State University of Novi Pazar with a GPA of 9.69. In 2018, he received an MSc in chemistry from the Faculty of Science, University of Kragujevac, with a GPA of 10.00. He completed his PhD in chemical sciences in 2023, defending a dissertation entitled Structural and Antioxidant Properties of Newly Synthesized Phenolic Derivatives of 4,7-Dihydroxycoumarin. His academic profile is catalogued in the national researcher registry COBISS.
Academic career
Current research
Since 2021, Milanović has served as research associate at the Institute for Information Technologies, University of Kragujevac. His research employs density functional theory (DFT), molecular docking, and molecular dynamics simulations to investigate antioxidant properties of polyphenolic compounds.[3][4][5] He also explores antimicrobial and anticancer ligand–enzyme binding mechanisms.[6][7][8][9]
Previous roles
From 2019 to 2020, he was a junior research assistant at the Faculty of Science, University of Kragujevac. In 2019, Milanović contributed to computational projects at the Bioengineering Research and Development Center (BioIRC).[10] Between 2016 and 2017, he served as a teaching associate at the State University of Novi Pazar, supporting courses in organic chemistry, physical chemistry, molecular modelling, and statistical analysis.[11]
Publications and projects
Milanović has published over 70 articles in SCI-indexed journals, cited more than 630 times. His work is catalogued in ORCID,[12] COBISS, and DBLP.[13] He has presented more than 50 communications at national and international conferences.
As part of the DAAD-funded "International HoME" project—collaboration between University of Kragujevac and Merseburg University of Applied Sciences—he completed two three-month research residencies in Germany (2021–2022).[14]
Awards and recognitions
Milanović received the Best Young Researcher Award in 2020 and the Best Researcher Award in 2025 from the Institute for Information Technologies. He won the Best Student Paper Award at IEEE BIBE 2021 for his antioxidant modeling study. In 2018, he was named Best Oral Presenter at the 24th Conference of the Serbian Crystallographic Society.[15] He was a Dositeja Scholar (2017–2018) under Serbia’s Fund for Young Talents.[16]
Science communication and public engagement
Milanović founded the Science Promotion Team at the Institute for Information Technologies to advance public understanding of science. He delivered a lecture for the "Month of Mathematics" initiative,[17][18] and presented "Oxygen – the Essential Pollutant" at the Kragujevac Science Club in partnership with the Serbian Chemical Society.[19] In 2024, he took part in European Researchers' Night, showcasing 3D printing in biomedicine.[14] He was featured on the science podcast "Sa naukom na ti".[20]
Literary and poetic expression
Beyond his scientific career, Milanović writes poetry. He won first prize in the student category for "Prsten" at the Književna manifestacija Na pola puta in Prijepolje.[21] Several poems appeared in the centennial monograph Tamo, gde pogled ne doseže (2021).[22] His poem "Mahšava" was included in the anthology of the 29th Sinđelićeve čegarske vatre competition (2019).[23]
