Christine Hone-Buske (née Christine Buske, b. 10 February 1986, d. 22 May 2019.[1]) was a Dutch-Brazilian neuroscientist and businessperson. In her later life, she resided mostly in Canada where she completed her undergraduate and doctoral studies at the University of Toronto until she relocated to England. Her dissertation focused on the cognitive and behavioral effects of ethanol on embryo development. After the defense of her dissertation, she worked in development and marketing of reference management software and academic publication.

Biography

Early life

Hone-Buske was born to Nair Carmen Buske, a Brazilian businesswoman, and Leo den Hartog, a Dutch merchant mariner, at Moinhos de Vento hospital in Porto Alegre, Brazil. As a small child, her parents decided to raise her in the Netherlands, but they divorced not long after settling there. She was then raised by her mother until she left for university in Toronto.

Due to her upbringing, She spoke fluent Portuguese, Dutch, English, and German.

Education

H.B.Sc. in Biology, 2007, University of Toronto, Erindale College.

Ph.D. in Behavioural Neuroscience, 2013, University of Toronto, School of Graduate Studies. Thesis title: Zebrafish Shoaling Behavior: Its Development, Quantification, Neuro-chemical Correlates, and Application in a Disease Model.[2]

Career

Hone-Buske was an active researcher starting as an undergraduate student[3]. Immediately after graduate school, she joined Springer Nature in 2013 as a member of the Papers document referencing software team.[4] She then worked on a similar software team for Elsevier[5] before joining CrossRef were she worked until her passing.[6][7]

Hone-Buske also created web content.[8][9], and did voiceover direction in advertising on a part time basis.

Marriage and children

She married David Hone, a British paleontologist, in 2018 and remained so until her death.

She had no children.

Death

Hone-Buske died May 22, 2019 at an Amsterdam hospital after an intense battle with esophageal cancer. She was a non-smoker and 35 years old. These two factors that likely caused medical professionals to overlook cancer as a cause when she began experiencing discomfort with eating earlier in 2018.
