Yongzhang Zhou, Prof , Professor of School of Earth Sciences and Engineering, Chief Scientist of the Research Center for Earth Environment & Resources of Sun Yat-sent University. He got his B.Sc. degree from Sun Yat-sent University University (1982), M. Sc. from The Chinese Academy of Sciences (1987), Ph. D. from Québec Université, Canada (1992),Guest Professor of Stanford University (1996).

He is the prize winner of several national societies for his scientific contributions, the winner of the Excellent Teacher of National Education Ministry of China and the Felix Chayes Prize of the International Association for Mathematical Geosciences (2015), also the author of more than 500 scientific papers and monographs. Responsible for several key research or consultation projects at national or provincial level.

Research interests

(1) Big data mining, machine learning and mathematical geoscience; (2) Ore deposit-related geochemistry, focusing on metallogenesis and geological settings of the Qinzhou Bay – Hangzhou Bay Joint Orogenic Belt, a giant suture seperating the Yangzi and the Cathaysian blocks, as well as a recently recognized giant metallogenetic belt, South China; (3) Environmental geochemistry, focusing on regional input-output flux, eco-geochemical effect, and eco-geochemically early warning forecast of soil heavy metals in the Pearl River Delta Economic Zone, South China; (4) Economic and sustainable development study related to earth environment and resources.

Most Significant Contributions to Research

(1) Hierarchical paths of migration of impurity trace elements in source rocks and resulted fractal structure patterns and conjugate geochemical anomalies using mathematical modeling and computer simulation

This study systematically explores the migration processes and images of impurity trace elements in source rocks based on mathematical modeling and computer simulation. It provides with vital basis in understanding basic metallogenetic mechanism such as reactivation and long distant migration of trace elements in source rocks as well as multi-level geochemical anomalies. This study puts forward two new concepts of migration sink and hierarchical path, as well as embedded sink mosaic model, which is referred to the hierarchical array of different layers of sink mosaic. The study shows that the migration of impurity trace elements in source rocks strictly complies with hierarchical paths characterized by a fractal structure. There are two general tendencies for trace elements to migrate according to the embedded sink mosaic model. One is that trace elements tend to migrate out of solid cells and enriched in the weaknesses. Through various rank sinks, trace elements will finally joins a bulk aqueous solution filling in significantly large scale faults. The other tendency is from high temperature fields toward lower ones. High temperature and temperature gradient favor the establishment of these tendencies. Reactivation of trace elements by diffusion is essentially a kind of short-range oriented mass transport within bulk solids and lower ranks of sinks. The path is the same as the migration tendency of a trace element in the embedded sink mosaic model. Despite the high effectiveness of infiltration and flow of fluids in transporting elements, diffusion is vitally important to the migration of a impurity trace element in source rocks. Conjugate geochemical anomalies are an inevitable result of a closed material system. Two geological environments are especially promising in development of large scale conjugate geochemical anomalies: areas with highly contrast of temperature distribution, e.g., a metamorphic center and its surroundings, and a large fault system. Such conjugate anomalies, when superimposed on regional geochemical anomaly, could be an excellent guide for ore exploration and prospective assessment.

(2) Reconstruction of Non-linear Geochemical Dynamics of Elemental Sedimentation at Water/Sediment Interface Based on Power Spectral Analysis of Time Sequence

This study deals with the reconstruction of non-linear geochemical dynamics of elements at water to sediment interfaces by applying maximum entropy spectral analysis (MESA) and multi-dimensional cross spectral analysis (MCSA). It shows that MESA and MCSA are two important tools to study periodicity of elemental sedimentation in strata, and may be used to unveil the non-linear geochemical dynamic proecesses of element sedimentation at water to sediment interface. By introducing the maximal sedimentary trend factor (MSTF) and the preferential component (PC), the case study on the hydrothermally sedimented Nandan - Hechi basin demonstrates that different elements possess the same evolution periods as the main sedimentary trend factor, quite consistent with the conclusion derived from Markov chain analysis of lithologic cyclicity of the same area. However, they are often out of phase. MnO changes behind Al2O3 and TiO2; and CaO and SiO2 are obviously out-of-phase with each other, whereas only a small phase difference occurs between CaO and MnO. There is no significant linear correlation between FeO and MnO. Behind these phenomena lies non-linear geochemical dynamic processes of elemental sedimentation. This study helps understanding surface geochemical processes and metallogenetic mechanism. It was published in Mathematical Geology (1999, Issue 6).

(3) Quantitative Estimation of Element Mobility in Complex System of Deformation, Hydrothermal Wall-Rock Alteration and Mineralization Based on Mathematical Invariant Determination

This study discusses the methodology to determine mathematical invariant in a complex system of deformation, hydrothermal wall-rock alteration and mineralization using geochemical and geomathematical methods. The nominal abundance of an element in such a complex system may change in three ways or a combination of the three: by real gains or losses if mobile, by dilution during additions of other components, or by concentration via leaching of other soluble components. Gresens’ Equations were suggested to estimate volume and mass changes during alteration. But they contain two dependent variables with no independent means to determine one of them for general elements. The conserved element-normalized ratio is used to measure the real mass change of an examined altered system. As a case study, the Hetai gold deposit is discussed in detailed. The results show that a mass with an average mass factor of 1:0.92 has been added to unaltered initial rocks during hydrothermal alteration. The mass addition reaches its maximum in ore bodies, the intensely altered rocks, with an average mass factor of 1:0.84. Silica, precious metals, and most thiophile elements are regularly introduced into the wall rocks with the advance of alteration, whereas Na2O and most lithophile elements characteristic of the southern China basement and granites lost mass in the alteration. Some other elements (e.g., K2O, Rb, U, Ta, W) were added in the early stage of alteration, but removed or diluted during late intense alteration. This study corrects the distortion from traditional methods due to the closure effect of geochemical composition data, and provides more detailed processes of elements in a complex system. It was published in Acta Scientiarum Naturalium Universitatis Sun Yat-seni (2002) and Chinese Science Bulletin (1994).

(4) Study on Early-Warning and Prediction of Eco-Geochemical Environments Using Geomathematical and Geochemical methods

This is a series of studies carried in recent years, granted by the Chinese Ministry of Land and Resources via the programs of “Agricultural geological and ecological geochemical Survey in Pearl River Delta Economic Zone (PRDEZ)” and “Early warning and forecast of eco-geochemical environment of PRDEZ”. A huge amount of geochemical data have been obtained in the Pearl River Delta Economic Zone, Guangdong Province, a most developed area in China, in past decade. Various geomathematical methods, including multivariate statistical, local Moran’s I and GIS techniques, were used to mine the information from the data bank. In study, soil heavy metal sources area are identified, cumulative fluxes and rates of soil heavy metals are calculated, and the associated risk assessment are estimated and predicted. In addition, hotspots of heavy metallic elements in soils in the studied area are recognized by local Moran’s I. Usually the regional hotspots are affected by parent materials, and individual hotspots by anthropogenic factors. The regional hotspots of Ni and Cr are consistent with the highest mortality rate of Liver cancer.
