Wibool Piyawattanametha

Dr. Wibool Piyawattanametha graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles, with a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in 2004. He worked as a senior scientist at Stanford University's Bio-X Program from 2005 to 2009, and then as a research associate in 2010. He worked as a senior research scientist at Thailand's National Electronics and Computer Technology Center from 2010 to 2014. He is currently a professor at King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang's Department of Biomedical Engineering and Director of the Advanced Imaging Research (AIR) Center, Bangkok, Thailand.

In the fields of Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS), Photonics, and Biomedical Imaging, he has produced or co-authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications, as well as contributing 7 book chapters and 5 patents. He has an h-index of 27. He is the current conference chairman for the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) in MOEMS and Miniaturized Systems XIII of The Photonics West Conference in California, USA. He also organized many international conferences, including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Optical MEMS and Nanophotonics, IEEE CYBER Technology in Automation, Control and Intelligent Systems, IEEE Nanoelectromechanical Systems (NEMS) and IEEE Nanomedicine (NANOMED). He spoke at over 70 important gatherings throughout the world, including the World Economic Forum (WEF), the World Health Summit (WHS), and the World Science Forum (WSF). He co-founded and served on the executive board of the Global Young Academy (GYA) in Berlin, Germany, from 2010 to 2012. The GYA is a global organization that represents the voices of young scientists from all across the world.

He was awarded the Erasmus Mundus scholarship by the European Union in 2011 was named one of the top 40 young scientists under the age of 40 by the World Economic Forum in Geneva, Switzerland, in 2013. He plays a transformational role in merging scientific knowledge and technological innovation to better the state of the world. For his pioneering work in light microendoscopy techniques, he was awarded the renowned Fraunhofer-Bessel Research Award by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Berlin, Germany in 2014. He is the first Thai scientist to be honored with this honor. For his new optical imaging technology for early cancer detection, he received the Newton Fund Researcher Links prize from the British Council in 2015. In 2017, he was named a Fellow of The Royal Academy of Engineering's Leaders in Innovation Fellowships (LIF) program in London, United Kingdom. Since 2018, he has been an Adjunct Professor at Michigan State University's Institute for Quantitative Health Sciences and Engineering (IQ). He founded and served as the lead investigator of the Optical Preclinical Imaging and Computing Center for low-resource settings, which was financed by international research agencies over the last decade.

Technical Accomplishment

Co-developed the first linearization control method for electrostatically actuated surface micromachined 2-D scanner (2000)

Designed, fabricated, and demonstrated the first 2-D MEMS scanners with electrostatic angular vertical comb (AVC) actuators based on surface and bulk micromachined techniques for endoscopic imaging application (2005)

Co-developed the first 2-D MEMS scanners based for an Ultrahigh Resolution Optical Coherence Tomography (UHR-OCT) imaging endoscope (2005)

Co-developed the first compact 2-D MEMS scanners with high speed and large angular rotation for endoscopic imaging applications for both dual-axes confocal endoscopy (2007) for gastrointestinal tracts imaging in human and 2-photon microendoscope from small animal brain imaging (2006)

Co-developed the first real-time image mosaicking with a handheld dual-axes confocal microscope (2008)

Co-developed the first use of dual-axis confocal fluorescence microscope for in vivo skin imaging of human and mouse (2011)

Demonstrated the 1st first of MEMS based dual-axes confocal endoscope in pre-clinical human trial (2012)

Found a deep tech startup producing a fully automated cervical cancer screening based on deep learning technology since 2018

Contributed to 5 book chapters and filed 5 patents in micro- and nano-systems and biomedical imaging technology

Invited be an Adjunct Faculty Member at the Institute for Quantitative Health Science & Engineering (IQ), Michigan State University since 2018

Co-founded the Global Young Academy (GYA) based in Halle, Germany (L: globalyoungacademy.net).
