V K Choksy (born 22 December 1969, Colombo) is a Sri Lankan Lawyer and advisor.[1] He is considered as an eminent Civil Lawyer in Sri Lanka and currently appointed as the President’s Counsel. Choksy belongs to the influential family and is the son of politician and famous lawyer K. N. Choksy. He is best known for his expertise in resolving legal disputes and issues for government organisations as well as private clients. Choksy was one of the active members and was strongly involved in the constitutional challenge to the dissolution of Parliament in 2018.[2]

Choksy is also chairman of NIBM and director at NSBM, A Commission Member of the National Intellectual Property Commission, and Legal Advisor to The Mahapola Trust Fund. As a lawyer, he led several notable cases at state and federal courts.[3] Choksy has been widely recognized for his involvement in the supreme court cases and was appointed as the President’s Counsel under the Article 33 of the Constitution of Sri Lanka.[4]

Choksy has held a number of executive and non-executive positions at a number of companies including Golden Key Credit Card, Abans Finance PLC, Advantage Ltd, NIBM and others. He has won The Merit Prize For Professional Ethics And Accountancy In 1993.

Early life and education

Choksy was born in Colombo on 22 December 1969. Choksy comes from an influential family of lawyers in Sri Lanka, he is the grandson of N. K. Choksy Q.C.and son of K. N.Choksy P.C. Choksy’s father was a member of the Parliament of Sri Lanka and Cabinet Minister of Finance under Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe. He grew up with two siblings.

Choksy completed his primary education from St. Thomas Preparatory School, Kollupitiya, and then enrolled in the Colombo International School. As a teenager, Choksy decided to pursue law and continue the legacy. He studied at The Sri Lanka Law College, and even received the Mahapola Merit Scholarship, which he declined so that it would be offered to another student who needed it more.


Choksy started his career as a lawyer right after completing graduation from law school. He apprenticed with Mr. Romesh De Silva P.C., and started working with him after finishing college. Since 1993, Choksy has been practising law, with a speciality in Civil Law.

Choksy for over 25 years has had an active participation in The District Courts, Commercial High Courts, Civil Appellate High Courts, The Court Of Appeal and The Supreme Court. He specialises in handling commercial cases and has worked for a number of corporate clients.

Choksy served as a Supreme Court appointed non-executive director Of The Golden Key Credit Card Company. He was also a senior non-executive director for Abans Finance PLC for nine years and a director at the Advantage LTD.

Choksy has dealt with a number of constitutional and landmark cases along with participating in the Labour Related litigation in the Labour Tribunals At Colombo. In 2018, he was strongly involved in the constitutional challenge to the dissolution of Parliament along with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna in 2018, and was appointed as the President’s Counsel in 2019.

Choksy is the chairman of National Institute of Business Management (NIBM) which is one of the leading higher educational institutes in Sri Lanka, and a Director at National School of Business Management (NSBM) located in Sri Lanka. He was also appointed as a Commission Member Of The National Intellectual Property Commission, and a legal advisor to the Mahapola Trust Fund.


Choksy is the recipient of The Merit Prize For Professional Ethics And Accountancy, 1993 and Mahapola Award Scholarship at the Sri Lanka Law College Entrance Examination.

Personal life

Choksy married to Sirini Ratnayake Choksy, a Lawyer who has served in the Attorney General’s Department. The couple had three children, two daughters and a son. His eldest daughter is also a law student, his son is pursuing a college degree and his youngest daughter is in secondary school. Choksy speaks fluent English and Sinhala.

Choksy is a Vegitarian and is known for compassion for animals and has raised his voice for them. He is a Zorastrian Parsee from ancient Persian descent.
