Social Music (aka Social Listening) is a slang term defined as the idea of sharing user-created mixes of different songs to share with other like-minded users.[1] It was inspired by the App Store (iOS/iPadOS), Mixtape (disambiguation) using music libraries including Apple Music, Spotify, and YouTube. It is similar to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram on a platform setting, but instead of sharing posts, articles, videos, or pictures, it instead creates a digital mixtape in playlist form.[2] This technique of sharing musical preferences promotes social engagement.[3]

The act of participating in Social Music is executed by defining your personal musical tastes, then joining groups, or 'chats,' where you listen to playlists together in real time.[4]

The sharing of musical preferences and mixes is directly related (linked) to social media platforms as a transport.[5] However, there are emerging technologies, or 'apps,' that are specific to Social Music. [6][7] These technologies are designed to make the sharing of music easy.[8] Some of the more popular music listening apps are also starting to create technology to promote Social Music.[9][10][11]
