Salvino Spiteri

Salvino Spiteri (1926-1996) is a Maltese trade unionist and co-founder and first president of UHM, Voice of the Workers [1]. He was awarded the Ġieh ir-Repubblika award in 1994 [2] .

Early life

Salvino (also known as Salvinu) Spiteri was born and lived in Ħamrun, Malta. He founded the Santa Venera Lightnings football club in 1945[3] and studied at Plater College in Oxford, UK.

Work

UHM, Voice of the Workers, is a national trade union with members in the private and public sectors and was founded by Salvino Spiteri and Maurice Agius on 29 September 1966 [4], under the name Malta Government Clerical Union (MGCU). It changed its name to UHM (Union Haddiema Maghqudin) in 1978. UHM has always emphasised its political independence and identified itself as free trade union.[5]

Legacy

In 2001, UHM set up the Salvino Spiteri Foundation with the aim of promoting the development of human resources in Malta [6] [7]. On 29th September 2001 the President of Malta, Dr Guido de Marco, unveiled a monument of Salvinu Spiteri in his hometown Ħamrun [8].
