Penhurst, East Sussex
Penhurst is a village and civil parish, 18 miles (29 km) east of Lewes,[1] in the Rother District, in the county of East Sussex, England. In 2001 the parish had a population of 52.[2] The parish touches Ashburnham, East Sussex, Battle, East Sussex, Brightling and Catsfield.[3] Penhurst is in the Wealds of Kent.[4] Penhurst has shared a parish council with Ashburnham since 1954.[5] The 14th century parish church is dedicated to St Michael the Archangel. The actor Harry H Corbett (1925-1982) lies buried in the churchyard.[6]

History
The name "Penhurst means 'Pena's wooded hill'.[8] Penhurst was recorded in the Domesday Book as Penehest.[9] On 1 April 1934 part of Penhurst was transferred to Leigh and Speldhurst.[10]
