Omar Hamid García Harfuch (Cuernavaca, Morelos, February 25, 1982) is a police officer and employee of the Mexico City government. Since October 4, 2019 he has been Mexico City's head of police, officially secretario de Seguridad Ciudadana de la Ciudad de México in the government of Claudia Sheinbaum.

Biography

Omar García Harfuch was born in the city of Cuernavaca, Morelos, on February 25, 1982. He is the son of Javier García Paniagua, a prominent Mexican politician of the 1960s and 1970s who ran for the Mexican presidency in 1981 and Maria Sorté an actress best known for her appearance in Mexicano hasta las cachas and a number of telenovelas in the 1990s and 2000s [1] He is also the grandson of Marcelino García Barragán, a Mexican revolutionary, governor of Jalisco and the minister of defense under Gustavo Díaz Ordaz and during the Tlatelolco Massacre.[2]

He has a degree in laws from the Universidad Continental and has a degree in public security from Universidad del Valle de México. He also has taken special security courses at Harvard University and with the FBI.[3]

On June 26, 2020 at 06:38 local time, he suffered an attempt on his life in the middle of Paseo de la Reforma, one of the most prominent streets in Mexico City[4]. This was attributed to the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación. He was wounded but survived. [5] However, two of his bodyguards died, as well as a woman that happened to be walking by. 12 of his attackers were detained by the police.[6] This attack made national and international headlines because up till that point, drug cartels had limited their violence to surrounding areas, and hardly ever operated in Mexico City itself.
