The Ntare Lions League[1] often refered to as the "Lions League is a Sunday soccer league in Uganda that consists of 17 teams from Ntare School Old students. The League games are played on Sundays afternoons.

Background

Ntare Lions League is an old boys' league that was established by the old boys of ntare school. The league was aimed at allowing the old students to come together and network through sport.[2]

History

The inaugural season ran for four weekends at UICT Nakawa institute PlayGrounds from November to December 2014. Only four teams participated and Kashoro FC emerged the champion.

The League has subsequently been hosted at different places notably being season 8 that was played at the Mandela National stadium. Other host grounds being GEMs Cambridge in Butabika[3] and at Kings Park Arena. [4] . The Season 10 finals were played at the Ntare School grounds in Mbarara

The League has held 12 editions and the reigning champions Abashweki are the most successful side having lifted the Leagues' Shield for 3 times.

The 11th edition of the league was won by team Abashweki who double as the reigning champions of the lion league season 9.

Current Season

The 12th edition of the season is currently underway at the King park arena, Bweyogerere. It was suspended in May 2021 after 3 gameweeks following the COVID Lockdown measures were initiated

Competition Format

Competition

There are 19 clubs in the Lions League. During the course of the season each club plays the others once (a single round-robin system), for 18 games. Each Half goes for 30 minutes rather than the 45 minutes. Teams receive three points for a win and one point for a draw. No points are awarded for a loss. Teams are ranked by total points, then goal difference, then goals scored and then Head-to-Head. If still equal, teams are deemed to occupy the same position. If there is a tie for the top 2 positions, a match is played to decides rank.

Bweras

The 19th team (bweras) does not appear on the log which means points gained are not recorded

Finals & Placement Positions

At the end of 18 games, The top 2 teams at the end of the season face off in a Final game where the winner is crowned the season's champions. The other teams play placement games that help determine their final position on the seasons log e.g The 3rd team vs 4th team on the log to determine who finishes 3rd & 4th. [5][6]
