No Glory for Hate Act (H.R. 484)

House Bill 484, also known as the No Glory for Hate Act, is a bill sponsored by Linda Sanchez that would prohibit the use of federal funds to commemorate twice impeached former presidents.

Contents of the Bill

The sections of the bill, proposed on January 25th, 2021, are summarized as follows:[1]

Section 1

This bill can also be called the “No Glory for Hate Act”.

Section 2

The use of federal funding to commemorate any monument to a twice impeached former president, and naming any federal building or land after said president would be prohibited.

Section 3

The use of federal funding to support a commemoration of a twice impeached former president on a state-level or below would be prohibited.

Section 4

Twice impeached former presidents would not be allowed to receive any benefits under the Former Presidents Act of 1958, excluding United StateS Secret Service protection.

Section 5

Th Secretary of Defense would not be allowed to approve the burial of a twice impeached former president in Arlington National Cemetery.

Linda Sanchez, the main sponsor of the bill, proposed it as a way to hold Donald Trump accountable for his actions, particularly in the light of the 2021 storming of the United States Capitol|January 6th Capitol Riot and his subsequent Second impeachment of Donald Trump|second impeachment and Second impeachment trial of Donald Trump|acquittal.[3][4]

Opposition to the Bill

The bill has seen resistance by Republicans, who see it as a continued attempt to punish Donald Trump even though he was acquitted.[3]Mary Miller wrote on Twitter on February 18th, 2021, in response to the bill, "Seems as though no matter where he is buried he will be living forever in your minds! Nothing says 'unity' like a bill targeting one person," in reference to President of the President Joe Biden's calls for unity.[4]
