The second conviction in the Connecticut witch hunts and the first to confess was Mary Johnson of Wethersfield, Connecticut.[1] The year before these witch hunts began, in 1646, Johnson was employed as a house servant in Wethersfield. Johnson was initially accused of theft and taken to a local minister by the name of Samuel Stone for punishment. Based only on the accusation, Stone whipped Johnson.[2] While being whipped, Johnson claimed only to be dissatisfied with her work and stole nothing. Under threat of continued torture, she later confessed to acts of witchcraft, adultery, murder of a child and familiarity with the Devil.[3] No evidence of murder, theft or any other offense was identified, yet Johnson was convicted on December 7, 1648, and imprisoned in Hartford, Connecticut.[4] After discovering she was pregnant, her execution was delayed.[5] She was hanged in June 1650.[6]
