M P Joseph is a former UN diplomat and native of Thrippunithura in Ernakulam.[1]

Career

He was fielded by the Kerala Congress as the United Democratic Front (Kerala) candidate for the Thrikaripur Assembly Constituency in Kasaragod for the 2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly election held on 6 April 2021.[2] When the results were declared on 2 May 2021, Joseph polled 37.41% of the votes by getting a total of 60,014 votes, which is the second-highest votes polled by the Kerala Congress in any constituency in the state during the elections.[3][4] Joseph lost the elections, standing second to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate, M. Rajagopalan.

Family

Joseph is the son-in-law of the late veteran Kerala Congress Leader Sri. K. M. Mani,[2] and co-brother of Jose K. Mani, chairman of the Kerala Congress (M) faction of the Kerala Congress, which switched over to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) led Left Democratic Front shortly before the Assembly elections.[5] Joseph courted controversy by criticizing the cross-over of his brother-in-law to the LDF which had vilified Sri. K. M. Mani when he presented the Kerala State Budget in 2015 as Finance Minister of Kerala, but received accolades for standing firm with the UDF.[6]
