Kidston Pumped Hydro is a pumped storage power station currently under construction on the site of the former Kidston Gold Mine utilizing the two existing open pits on the site as the upper and lower reservoirs. The power output is planned at 250 MW with a total 2000 MWh capacity.[1]
The expected cost of the project is 777 Million Australian Dollars. The sources of the funding include a loan of 610 Million Australian Dollars from the Northern Areas Infrastructure Fund (NAIF) and 47 million Australian dollars from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA)[2].
Other pumped storage power stations built on mine sites have been proposed, including the Kanmantoo copper mine and Mount Rawdon gold mine. The Kidston project is the first to be constructed.
