Gymnázium Turnov (commonly abbreviated as GYTU) is a public general secondary school (see article Gymnasium (school)) which is administered by the school district of the Liberec Region of the Czech Republic. The school is located in Jana-Palacha street in Turnov.

History

Gymnázium Turnov’s history dates back to 1908 [1]when it was officially permitted to found a state school with Czech as the recognized language of instruction in a country in which the official language was German at that time. In the course of the 20th century, both the residence and the form of the school had changed multiple times, reflecting the then historical and political situation. By way of illustration, during the World War II, the building was occupied by the Germans and served as a military hospital.[1] As a result of this, the school had to seek refuge in buildings of other schools in Turnov.

Historically, the school offered various study programmes, ranging from 3-year courses to a 12-year study programme (joining basic and secondary education). Ultimately developments concluded by offering 4-year and 8-year courses of study.

School Building

Gymnázium Turnov resides in a building located in Výšinka (a quarter in Turnov). The structure was designed by Prague architect František Vahala, a student of Jan Kotěra. The construction of Gymnázium Turnov commenced in 1914. However, shortly after breaking ground, construction was interrupted by the World War I. The project resumed at the end of 1920s and was completed by 1930. [2]The building has been serving its purpose until today and is gradually undergoing a sensitive reconstruction.

The Present

Gymnázium Turnov offers education in 8-year and 4-year academic study programmes, [3]the aim of which is to prepare students for the subsequent university studies. The modern teaching provided by the school is based on its specific school educational programme which puts emphasis on the study of foreign languages and ICT Information and communications technology. The students are enabled and motivated to choose their major in either technical, economic, sciences or humanities within an elaborate system of optional courses. The number of students is fluid with around 360 [4]students on average.
