Federica Bocco (born July 9, 1996) is a journalist,[1] writer, editor, educator, and coach based in Italy. She mostly writes about feminism, social justice, and entertainment on various platforms. She has worked in PR, marketing, and higher education. Currently, she is the Editor-in-Chief of the global media and entertainment company The Tempest (media company)|The Tempest Media Inc.

Education and Research

She was born and raised in Naples, Italy, where in 2015 she obtained her high school diploma at Liceo Sannazaro|Liceo Classico Jacopo Sannazaro, one of the most prestigious high schools in Italy[2]. During her senior year, she was selected for a three-week internship program of journalism in London.

In 2018 she obtained her BA in Communications and Media and minor in Humanistic Studies at John Cabot University, an American liberal arts university in Rome. She was the recipient of various student awards, and she was the winner of the 2016/2017 Fuller Prize for Best Op-Ed Article.[3]

She did extensive studies on gender theory and queer theory. In 2016 she launched a blog called "Out of the Closet -> On Your TV" analyzing LGBTQIA+ representation in American television. She wrote her senior thesis on marketplace post-feminism, researching the contemporary trends in media of presenting the once-revolutionary concept of feminism as a way to appeal to a younger demographic and the way corporate brands strip feminism of its political intents to fight for all women's rights and focus instead of every woman's choice.

Career

In her teenage years, Bocco rose to fandom popularity on Twitter and Tumblr, gaining over 15,000+ followers on her accounts and dozens of thousands of impressions per day. She is best known online under different aliases as a pop culture opinion leader. She's been influencing fandom trends since 2011 via her reviews, tweets, and essays. Today, her tweets earn an average of 5 million organic impressions every year, and her articles have been read over a million times. She also gained a modest following for her fanfiction writing, posting stories on websites such as Fanfiction.net, Archive of Our Own, and the Italian website EFPfanfic.net. She started appearing on various podcasts and hosting Q&As with hundreds of questions.

In 2014-2015, she was a writer and the editor-in-chief of Sannazaro's newspaper, LiberaMente. At John Cabot University, she contributed regularly for the newspaper The Matthew [4] and wrote, edited and copywrote content for the university's website, blog, and social media.

She has been Freelancer|freelancing on the side since 2017, writing opinion pieces and reviews for books, films, and television shows on publications such as Cosmopolitan (magazine)|Cosmopolitan [5], Winter Is Coming,[6] Fandom (website)|Fandom, Medium (website)|Medium, TV Series Hub[7], The Nerd Daily [8], among others. She also works as a freelance English/Italian translator, ghost-writer, and editor.

In January 2018, she started writing for The Tempest (media company)|The Tempest about news, career, tech, entertainment, and life. After completing her editorial fellowship, she stayed at The Tempest as the pop culture Editor|editor and in 2020 became the publication's Managing Editor and then Editor-in-Chief [9].

In 2021, Bocco became the Editorial Director of the English-language Italian magazine Romeing. She also co-wrote a book (in Italian) called Vita: Istruzioni Per L'Uso and published a chapter in the book (in Italian) Non Solo Q.I.

She has written and co-authored two film scripts and a sitcom concept, and she's currently working on her first solo book. Her academic writings and articles have been cited in other academic works and media investigations in addition to being shared by thousands on social media. She will be co-hosting the second season of The Tempest's podcast The Exposé with CEO Laila Alawa.
