Des Georges Mine
Des Georges was a copper, gold, and silver underground mine located north of the village of Kuujjuaq along the Koksoak River in the Nord-du-Québec region of Quebec, Canada. It opened in 1954 and ceased operations in 1991, when historic low prices of the metals mined at Des Georges made it uneconomical to ship ores from the remote facility.[1] Des Georges had already been producing relatively small amounts of ore. During its operation, the mine sent ore up the river by cargo ship to the ocean, where it was shipped to Quebec City and sent to refineries by rail. Like other mines in the region, operations at Des Georges were hampered by permafrost and continual low temperatures.[2] After its shutdown, the mineral rights were sold to the Quebec government and all mining facilities on site were demolished. Only repurposed housing for miners remains standing on the premises.
