David Veale

David Mikael William Veale Royal College of Psychiatrists, British_Psychological_Society, British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies FBABCP is a British Psychiatrist born 1956. He is a visiting professor in cognitive behavioural psychotherapies at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, Psychology and Neuroscience, King's College London and a consultant psychiatrist at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. He has conducted a range of clinical research especially in body dysmorphic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, emetophobia and depression.

Education

Professor Veale studied medicine at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, University of London, from which he graduated in 1980, after doing an intercalated degree in Psychology at Bedford College. He subsequently trained in psychiatry on the Royal Free Hospital rotation and the Maudsley Hospitals.

Initiatives

He has been part of a number of initiatives that have improved mental health care, including:

  • Member, NICE guidelines on OCD and BDD
  • Chair, NICE Evidence Update on OCD and BDD
  • Member of the World Health Organization, revision of the ICD-11 edition of ICD for obsessive compulsive and related disorders

Affiliation

He is a founding Trustee of various UK charities: OCD Action, the BDD Foundation, EmetAction and Friends of the Anxiety Disorders Residential Unit.

Clinical Expertise

His main clinical expertise is in treatment of OCD, BDD, emetophobia and depression. He has developed and evaluated protocols for BDD and emetophobia that are used by other cognitive behaviour therapists.

Research and teaching and other activities

He is the first author or been a co-author on the first RCT on CBT v a wait list in Body Dysmorphic Disorder (Veale et al, 1996); the first RCT on CBT v anxiety management control in BDD (Veale et al, 2010); the first RCT on CBT for BDD in adolescence (Mataix-Cols, 2015); the first RCT on CBT for emetophobia (Riddle-Walker et al, 2016) and the first RCT on triple chronotherapy in out-patients with depression (Veale et al 2021)

He lives in North London and plays the saxophone for Bedlam.
