Cozzuoliphyseter is an extinct genus of sperm whales from the Early Miocene of Patagonia, Argentina.

Systematics

The type species of Cozzuoliphyseter, C. riongrensis, was originally named Aulophyseter rionegrensis in 1974 from the Miocene-age Gran Bajo del Gualicho Formation of Patagonia, Argentina.[1] Cozzuol (1993), however, showed that rionegrensis is not congeneric with the Aulophyseter type species, and coined the nomen ex dissertationae Patagophyseter for it.[2][3] Because Cozzuol's work is not a valid publication under ICZN rules, Paolucci et al. (2020) formally renamed Aulophyseter rionegrensis as Cozzuoliphyseter in honor of Mario Cozzuol.[4]
