David Afriyie Obeng (born 3 December 1994), known professionally as Friyie[1], is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and rapper.[2]His 2017 single “Money Team”[3] became underground rap’s hottest new song for the summer, and became the soundtrack to the Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor press conferences[4]. His debut extended play, ANF: Ain’t Nothing Free, was released on March 22, 2019, by BONG Ent and Empire, which received well reviews from Now[5], and Exclaim!, giving his debut body of work 9/10 stars.[6]. Notable collaborators include Grammy award winner, Roddy Ricch, and Juno award winner Tory Lanez who both featured on his project, others include Bun B, Rick Ross, and Dexta Daps.

Early life

Friyie was born on December 3, 1994 in Toronto, Ontario to first generation immigrants of Ghanaian decent. He grew up in a rough neighbourhood of Jane & Finch, notoriously known for gang affiliation and crime activity. Friyie always had an interest in music and create arts at a very early age, and continued to work on his craft until making a name for himself. He also attended and graduated from York University.

Career

2016 - Present

Friyie began to make a name for himself with the release of his hit single "Come and Get It", which was produced by frequent collaborator TwoTone. It was this defining record that built a buzz in the city and was featured on DJ Charlie B mixtape the summer of 2016. In that same year he was featured on a frequent collaborators project titled "Giinchy 5x" by Meeno Giinchy, where he appeared on 8 of the total 16 tracks.[7] In 2017 he released another hit record "Money Team" which amassed over 1 million views on YouTube, and was on Floyd Mayweather's curated playlist.[8] In the same year Friyie opened up for Cardi B at the T-Mobile Area in Las Vegas, Nevada. In the first quarter of 2019 he released his debut project ANF: Ain't Nothing Free.[9] In June, of 2020, Friyie released the follow up EP to his industry debut "Before the Flight", and then in September released the Deluxe version. On July 31, 2020, he featured on Dexta Daps album "Vent" which debuted #10 on the Reggae Billboard Chart. [10]
